Or, they simply don’t have a signature for the file because they have never seen it it. If you don’t re-upload on VT to check, you will never know the file was actually malicious. This process usually takes 24-48 hours but can take up to a week. When they realize it’s the same (but slightly edited) malicious file, they immediately slap a detection signature on it. If they don’t have a signature for it, it will show up as clean. When you first submit a file, the AV companies immediately check their databases. The file is still malicious but the code-change makes it difficult to detect. The reason being is many malicious software developers edit their code slightly to throw off AVs. If it still shows up clean, you should be good to go. Re-upload the file in 24-48 hours to re-check. This is because they just received it and so far it looks OK. If you upload a new file, it may show up as clean (green check-marks) from all the AVs. Scan are in real-time and file-size dependent a 1MB file will scan quicker than a 300MB file with most scans being under 5 mins. ![]()
